A comparison of techniques for measuring the trace element content of human teeth: laser ablation ICP-MS versus solution ICP-MS of micromilled enamel

چکیده
Through analysis of their chemical composition, human teeth may serve as retrospective bioindicators of preand postnatal nutrition and exposures to environmental pollutants. The research presented here explores the agreement of laser ablation ICP-MS and solution ICP-MS analyses aimed at capturing temporal changes in the trace element composition of enamel. Good agreement was found for LA-ICP-MS and solution ICP-MS samples for Mg, Mn, Zn and Sr (laser ablation concentrations at 80% of the equivalehnt solution values), while fair results were found for Ba (60% agreement). Agreement for Pb was poor (<35%). These findings suggest that LA-ICP-MS can provide adequately accurate concentrations for certain elements used to assess the chemical composition of dental enamel. It also shows that micromilled enamel samples are preferable over standard whole dissolution methods as they are able to capture temporal trends in the uptake of elements. © 2011 Universal Research Publications. Strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) of tooth enamel: a comparison of solution and laser ablation multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry methods.
Strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) in tooth enamel provide a means to investigate migration and landscape use in humans and other animals. Established methods for measuring (87)Sr/(86)Sr in teeth use bulk sampling (5-20 mg) and labor-intensive elemental purification procedures before analysis by either thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) or multicollector inductively coupled plasma ma...

Microspatial analyses of the trace element composition of dental enamel are made possible using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Fine spatial resolution, multielement capabilities, and minimal sample destruction make this technique particularly well-suited for documenting the distribution of elements in sequentially calcifying layers of enamel. Because de...

International reference materials representing a diverse suite of sulfide ores and related lithologies have been analyzed for major and trace element concentrations by XRF, solution ICP–MS, and laser-ablation ICP–MS (LA–ICP–MS) after fusion of the sample to a lithium borate glass. Reference materials analyzed for this study include a wide variety of bulk compositions, including ores of Pb–Zn su...

Basic rocks appear as cumulative hornblende gabbros in the Namen pluton, West of Sabzevar. One outcrop of these rocks contains magnetite ore patches. Although magnetite- bearing hornblende gabbro (MHG) and other hornblende gabbros (HG) have similar mineralogy, their trace element compositions are completely different. Trace element analysis of magnetite minerals by laser ablation inductively co...
